Historial de Navegación is Valentina Alvarado’s first solo show. Encompassing collage and graphic art, the exhibition reflects the artist’s interest in the transitoriness and fragmentation of our lives in different planes of reality.
Digital collages printed on cotton paper are held with pins, causing a state of lightness. A set of artifacts and an intervened paper roll with carefully cut-out drawings and clues are extended over a table. The repetitions inside the roll mark a deliberate rhythm that contrasts with the light stain of watercolor and the fineness of pencil. Valentina Alvarado’s process—in her own words—“resembles an inquiry.”
Her work references her training as graphic designer and visual artist, working in two and three dimensions. The pieces are subject to an elaborate digital transformation that is as violent as it is subtle, resulting in fragments of daily life that may be unknown to us. The ephemeral scanner drawings that are later printed reflect curiosity for an ephemeral or permanent time. The artist has also created the website historialdenavegacion.com as an extension of the dialogue between the physical and the digital that is so central in her oeuvre.
